Hello, fight fans, and happy May! While Blogger Blitz: Black Sheep still lies in the distance, there’s a lot of work to be done in advance and this year the fans will be more involved than ever. If you missed the announcement for Black Sheep or you’ve stumbled upon this article and have no clue what Blogger Blitz even is. you can check out this article for the full story. However, as a reminder I’ll throw in the most important details here.
Blogger Blitz: Black Sheep is a competitive blogging tournament where a number of game bloggers will submit their favorite video game villains to compete in a series of random events. A panel of judges will read the posts submitted by each competitor and choose a winner. This will build up to a final battle between two potential champions, who will then become the winners of Blogger Blitz: Black Sheep and earn themselves some sweet, sweet bragging rights.
During the month of May, I’ll be accepting prompts from adventurers like you and combining them into wacky events for our villainous champions to compete in. This will take place in two main phases – the Event Submission phase and the Event Design phase!
The Event Submission phase is the one taking place right now. Any blogger can take part, and golly is it easy to take part. All you have to do is leave a comment at the bottom of this post. There’s no commitment, there’s no hassle, just however long it takes you to type a couple of words on your keyboard or smartphone.
“Okay, but should the comment say something specific?”
I’m getting there, no worries. Each event in the first round of Blogger Blitz: Black Sheep will be made up of two factors: a mundane activity and a gaming complication. To use some of last year’s events as an example, delivering mail is a mundane activity, but the presence of Cerberus, the three-headed hellhound, made that a lot more complicated. Setting up a blind date is pretty mundane but not when the eligible bachelor is a malboro, the venomous tentacled plant monstrosity of Final Fantasy fame. While your mundane activity should most definitely be something that can be summarized as a verb (to cook, to repair, to exercise), the gaming complication could be a character who is present, an object that must be used on the job or that makes the job harder, or even a weird phenomenon like an unusual weather pattern or exotic location.
One thing to keep in mind here: your activity and complication won’t necessarily go together, so don’t submit them as a single event idea. Because during the next phase of this process, things are going to get all jumbled up!
The second phase of the event creation process will take place on Twitter, so if you don’t currently follow me there and you want to be more deeply involved in the process, you’re gonna want to follow this link! Here’s how it works. On Twitter, I’ll be taking the various pieces of events submitted here on WordPress and trying them out in different jumbles. Does “cooking” pair better with “robot overlords” or “platformer power-ups?” What kind of event could be created out of the activity “hiking” and the complication “Falcon Punch?” I’ll pose these questions primarily in the form of polls, so you can quickly and easily vote for your favorite event ideas.
Once we’ve taken the event submissions and then designed them into the final events, I’ll randomly shuffle them and assign them to different slots on the first round tournament bracket. Then after the sign-ups in July, I’ll reveal which events were ultimately chosen and give thanks to those who submitted the component ideas.
One of my goals with Blogger Blitz: Black Sheep is to give everyone in the game-blogging community a chance to be involved. Sure, you may not have time to compete or judge, but you can come up with a cool event concept for those competitors and judges to engage with! It’ll add the element of randomness that make the Blogger Blitz so wacky and fun, and give even more people the opportunity to participate in this community-wide competition.
So now I turn the conversation over to you, adventurers! The Event Submission phase is now beginning, so leave a comment below with a mundane activity and a gaming complication that we can then use to design some fun events for our villains to compete in. I’ll leave the event running throughout the month of May, so if you can’t think of any ideas today feel free to submit at a later time. If you’re not following Adventure Rules and you want to keep up with everything Blogger Blitz, be sure to follow here and on Twitter so you never miss an opportunity to participate in the event. Thanks for reading, fight fans, and I look forward to seeing what you come up with!
Alright! This is going to be very awesome.
I’m gonna just splurge a few things, which you can use some or all or none of as you see fit 🙂
A few mundane activities:
DMing a role-playing game
Following a recipe to cook a loaf of bread (may include purchasing ingredients)
Repairing a bicycle
Teaching a pottery class (or some other type of class)
Doing some long division
Solving a crossword
Colouring in a picture
Some gaming complications:
Sudden tragic backstory
Ninjas steal your best equipment
Unexpected dancing minigame
Space Invaders happens
The BBC notices that games can have emotions and stuff
You have an energy mechanic and can only progress with microtransactions or by waiting for your energy to recharge
Ganondorf kidnaps Princess Zelda and you must travel through the Dark World in bunny form

Oh man, I love these suggestions! So depending on how many submissions I ultimately get, I may only be able to use one activity and one complication from each person; do you have a favorite pair that you’d want to be prioritized over your other suggestions?

Yeah, I figured these would probably not all get use, which is cool! Hopefully you get way too many submissions and have a really hard time cutting it down – it’d be a nice problem to have, I think. I would say I want to see them have to bake something, following the recipe and going shopping for the ingredients and everything, and I’d like something to be interrupted by a poorly-implemented energy system.

Excellent! Yes, I would be glad to have way too many submissions – I think we’ll get the best quality events that way. Based on the poll I posted today – er, yesterday, I guess – I think these are going to be a lot more wacky and fun than what we had last year!

This is rad! I could spend all day thinking of these for fun, but I’ll start with one of each. Mundane: reversing into a tight parking space. Gaming complication: the presence of a Tonberry.

Awesome! Tonberries (Tonberrys?) are no joke, that will definitely complicate whichever activity that sucker shows up at.
I’m also really excited for a fantasy villain that has never heard of an automobile to get your mundane activity, haha.

Ok, here goes…
Mundane activity: making a cup of tea.
Gaming complication: the only item in your inventory is a three-headed monkey.

I gotta say, I am definitely looking forward to seeing some creative uses for that three-headed monkey!

Well after last year’s Blogger Blitz entry, I thought I’d keep the Monkey Island theme going! 🐒

Would it really be a Blogger Blitz if a Monkey Island reference was not involved? xD

I shall make it my mission to include at least one reference in all future events! ha ha ha

Okay, I’m in-
Mundane- Setting up a blog
Gaming Complications- An AI has decided that bloggers are tools of the rebellion and sends hit squads of cybernetic house cats to assassinate bloggers.
Mundane- Grocery shopping
Complication- Entire grocery store is inhabited by the Zerg. Though they do offer some pretty good sale prices on in season fruit and vegetables since they took over management

Great suggestions! Grocery shopping is a classic and having a villain start a blog for a blogging competition is just the sort of meta-level weirdness that the Blogger Blitz is known for.
A couple quick questions for you. One, are you okay with your complications being a bit more generalized and applied to other mundane activities? You’ve paired your activities and complications with each other here, but they could potentially get jumbled with submissions from other people. I just want to make sure you’re alright with that possibility before proceeding.
Question two: of the suggestions you submitted, do you have a favorite of each (activity and complication)? It is possible I may have to limit suggestions to one per person, so if it comes to that I want to take the ones you like the best!

Sure, they can be more generalized
Personally I like the mundane grocery shopping and like the cybernetic cats directed by an AI best of the complications

Create an engaging blog post!
Except the other competitor has created a glitch of their specification to sabotage you (type with the screen off, type with teeny text, use Google translate to change the text to Japanese then French then English again, cannot use the word “the”, etc.)! The most coherent post at the end wins.
I dunno. Sounded good written on a napkin.

I certainly like it! Creating a blog post was someone else’s backup suggestion so now it can burst through to the forefront as a legit event.
I do have one question. The intent is for everyone’s activity and complication to get jumbled, so it is very likely that your suggestions will be mixed with someone else’s (I thought I put that in the article but I’m gonna double-check now because you are not the first one to submit a connected suggestion). Are you alright with your complication being generalized as “bugs/glitches” so that it will be able to fit with activities suggested by other participants?

Of course, my friend! Whatever floats your adventure boat. I’m just here for the free handouts 🙂

Ha! If I keep this formula going, by next year I’ll be delegating the hosting duties too and all I’ll have to do for Blogger Blitz 2019 is take credit for the event. 😉

Ideas? For complications? How ’bout add some bosses?
Gandhi and his nukes from Civilization IV.
Kirby? He’s basically invincible.
Dark Eater Mdir. This one is. So. Frustrating ingame. Dark Souls III
Donkey Kong and his barrels.

Can’t have a video game blogging event without bosses! And while I’m not familiar with some of them, they all sound like tough folks to deal with.
Two questions: would you enjoy seeing them all in a boss rush format where competitors have to face them in a row? And would you also like to submit a mundane activity for someone else’s gaming complication to – er, complicate?

The boss rush format would be fine! And also…
Mundane Activity: Cook a 5-course meal.
Gaming complication: Someone shoots bullets at their feet every 15 seconds and you have ‘Navi’ from ‘Legend of Zelda’ rushing you with her absolutely annoying voice.
